Imagine a one-way switch for very high power (like controlling a giant electric motor or a heater) that you can turn ON with a small button, but you can only turn it OFF by cutting the main power.
That's essentially an SCR. It's a solid-state device (no moving parts) used to control large amounts of electrical power.
